Yoshio Machida is a sound & visual artist, Steel Pan player. Born in Japan in 1967.
He studied minimal art / music / film extensively under Kuniharu Akiyama, Yoshiaki Touno, Sakumi Hagiwara, Kishio Suga at Tama art university in Tokyo.
In 2001, Machida started to perform improvised music with Steelpan (steel drum). Because, as the same as gong, steelpan has metal overtones. At first he played self-made Steel Pan "Amorphone". For getting basic drone sound supporting improvisation (like tampura), he often used Max/MSP processing system. The improvisation style has been influenced from traditional Indian music. Now he play Steelpans acoustically and electronic Steelpan "PanKAT", too. The music includes elements of ambient, experimental, electro-acoustic, noise, electronics, and contemporary music.
Machida is also a band member of "WALK WITH THE PENGUIN" (a collaborative post-rock with a Selbian band Cinc), "Miimo" (dub-electronica unit with tatsu and Norihide Saji) and "Ohanami" (with Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, a drumer of Jim O'Rourke band).
